bWell Update: 2018 Preview
Month four of the bWell Rocks Tour is here! As of November, more than 500 people have joined the tour to rock their health and financial wellness and earn bWell points. It’s not too late to join the tour and start earning points. When you earn 7,000 bWell points by July 31, 2018, you are inducted into the Hall of Fame and quality to win the ultimate VIP experience – a rock-star-style package, and nine other rockin’ prizes.
Visit mybmcwellness.com to sign up for the tour, check your progress or see the variety of ways you can earn bWell points. Here are just a few:
- Avoid the flu: Get a flu shot and 150 bWell points. Remember, flu shots are 100% covered under all BMC medical plan options. Getting a flu shot at your local in-network retail clinic or pharmacy is convenient and will cost less than going to your doctor. Confirm that the retail clinic or pharmacy is in-network before you go.
- Join Naturally Slim: BMC will offer the Naturally Slim program in February. Naturally Slim is an online program that helps you lose weight and improve your overall health – all while eating the foods you love. With Naturally Slim, you’ll learn that you don’t have to starve yourself or count calories to be healthy, lose weight, and keep it off forever. Watch your email in January for the program application and eligibility requirements.
- Join a team challenge and earn 200 bWell points.
- Maintain Don’t Gain: Create or join a team and support each other to maintain or lose weight this holiday season. Keep an eye on your progress and each week track successful weigh-ins. Track 45 successful weigh-ins between November 16 and December 31, 2017.
- Set Your Pace: Physical activity can help you do more than lose weight – it also can improve health conditions and provide stress relief. As a team, complete and track at least 3 million steps’ worth of physical activity between December 4, 2017, and March 2, 2018.
Tuition Assistance Reminder
BMC offers tuition assistance to help you continue your education, strengthen your skills and build a stronger career. If you are registering for winter college courses and want to use your tuition reimbursement benefit, you must complete the pre-approval process on the Your Spending Account (YSA) website. Your manager must also sign a pre-approval that you submit to YSA. Take a few minutes to review the Tuition Reimbursement application and pre-approval process.
With prior manager approval, the BMC Tuition Reimbursement Program may reimburse you for certain tuition expenses for undergraduate and graduate level college courses up to the annual $5,500 cap. Eligible expenses include tuition, textbooks and all laboratory and computer fees. Due to IRS limits, only the first $5,250 of reimbursed expenses are considered non-taxable, any additional expenses reimbursed within the current year that exceed this amount will be considered taxable income.
If you have questions about Tuition Reimbursement, call YSA at 1-877-262-4849, (select option 2 – Your Spending Account).
Time Off to Spread Holiday Cheer
Hello December! With a new holiday on the horizon comes many opportunities to spread cheer and volunteer in your community. BMC provides two paid volunteer days each year — Volunteer Time Off (VTO) — for employees to work in their communities. Visit the BMC Cares page to learn about opportunities to get involved in company-sponsored projects and group-volunteer opportunities this holiday season.
Are Annual Eye Exams Really Necessary?
According to VSP, a recent study found that one in four adults hadn’t had an eye exam in the past two years, and the same proportion was unaware that an eye exam could prevent them from losing their sight. Even if you’ve had laser vision surgery or have naturally good vision, you still need an annual eye exam. During an eye exam, your eye doctor will look for signs of health conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Early detection and treatment is the best way for you to keep your body—and wallet—healthy. Find out more about what a routine eye exam can say about your overall health.

Are You Facing a Difficult Issue and Need Help?
The most wonderful time of the year can also be the most stressful. If you’re feeling stressed, worried or having a tough time, you can talk to a licensed psychologist or therapist two ways:
- An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) confidential consultation is available anytime by calling Magellan Behavioral Health at 1-800-327-1393. Once you call the EAP, a confidential appointment with a counselor may be scheduled. The counselor will help you assess your situation and identify possible solutions and available resources. The telephone call and the first six visits to a counselor are provided at no cost to you. Learn more by visiting the Magellan website. [Enter 1-800-327-1393 to register.]
- Consult with behavioral therapists anytime from your phone or web conferencing through MDLIVE at 1-800-400-6354 or by visiting the MDLIVE website. The consultation fee varies by provider but generally ranges from $80 to $175 for HSA Plan participants who haven’t met their deductible. PPO Plan participants will pay a $40 consultation fee until December 31, 2017. Starting January 1, 2018, the consultation fee will increase to $44.
