When Can I Change My Benefits?
Good question! Outside of the annual enrollment period, you can make changes to certain BMC benefits only if you have a "qualified family status change," also called a life event. Life events include:
- Marriage, divorce or legal separation
- Birth or adoption of a child
- A dependent's death
- You or a dependent becoming Medicare-eligible
- A change in your spouse's employment status that results in a change to his or her benefits coverage
If you experience a life event, you have 31 days from the event to change or elect coverage, either through the Your Benefits Resources website, or by calling the BMC Benefits Center at 1-877-BMC-4849. If you do not take action to change your coverage within 31 days of the life event, you may have to wait until the annual enrollment period for the following year to change your coverage.
Look it up! See the complete list of life events in the BMC U.S. Benefits Guide.
