Tips to Stay Healthy and Save on Health Care

BMC is committed to helping employees and their families achieve and maintain the best health possible. We also want to help you save money when you receive health care services. Here are a few money saving tips:

  1. Use in-network doctors, labs, clinics and hospitals. You save money because in-network providers charge lower, negotiated rates for services.
  2. Consider where you seek care. For instance, you will save money and time when you seek care at a convenience clinic, physician’s office or urgent care center (depending on the nature of the illness or injury) rather than at the emergency room.
  3. Teladoc can be used as an alternative to urgent care or emergency rooms especially in off hours, weekends, holidays or when you’re travelling. A call or online video consultation with a Teladoc board-certified physician or pediatrician costs only $40 for each consultation. Learn more.
  4. Get preauthorization. It is required for all hospital admissions and surgeries, and for some prescription drugs.
  5. Ask for generic drugs as a substitute for brand names. If you are enrolled in a BMC medical plan (other than the HMO), access the website at www.express-scripts.com to search for lower cost medications covered by your plan.
  6. Use mail order for maintenance drugs. Mail order is convenient and cost-effective if you take medicines on an ongoing basis (for allergies, birth control, diabetes, etc).
  7. Keep up with your preventive care including immunizations, routine exams, tests and cancer screenings. Regular preventive care can help you find and treat conditions and illness before they escalate into costly health care services later. BMC’s medical plans cover many preventive care services at 100% when you use in-network providers.
  8. Earn wellness premium discounts. The best way to avoid health care costs is to discover and work to change habits that may be putting your health at risk. Taking the Well Being Assessment™(WBA) is an easy way to get started. It’s also the first step in earning up to $600 off your 2015 medical plan premiums.
  9. Get screenings to know your health numbers (blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose) to get a better handle on your health status. Watch your email for dates and times for onsite biometric screenings through Healthways.
