Take a Mental Hike: De Stress
Think taking breaks is for wimps? Think again. Studies show that performance improves when you take just two minutes for a mental hike.
Experts say our energy levels decline every 90 to 120 minutes. The best way to recover is to take a break. Breaks give you a chance to recover from the eyestrain, back pain, muscle tension, stress and tiredness that build up while you work. The right mental hike can relax you while increasing your productivity and accuracy.
Try taking a mini-break every 90 to 120 minutes just for a week. Take two to five minutes for your mental hike. If it works for you, keep it going. And if it doesn't work for you, tweak it and then try it again.
Mental Hike Ideas
- Move: get up to refill your water glass, stand up and stretch out, get outside to check the weather in real time.
- Play a round of "words with friends," or "math with your friends."
- Try using a relaxation smartphone app like "GPS for the Soul." This app measures your pulse rate through the camera lens and then it suggests a one- or two-minute breathing exercise or calming music.
