Leave of Absence: What You Need to Know

Whether you suddenly become ill or injured, or you're planning surgery or child birth, you'll need to know the basics of BMC's short-term disability benefits and family medical leave policy.

The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the Short-Term Disability (STD) program work hand-in-hand. FMLA allows you to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a 12-month period due to certain family and health related reasons or your own serious health problem. STD, on the other hand, pays a percentage of your regular salary if you are unable to work due to an illness, injury or pregnancy. FMLA and STD run concurrently.

BMC provides STD coverage at no cost to you. BMC pays for the first five days of your illness-related absence, and the remaining STD benefits are paid to you directly from Liberty Mutual, BMC’s disability and FMLA administrator. If your leave is approved, you receive 100% of your base salary for weeks two and three, 75% for weeks four to six, and 66 2/3% for weeks seven through 26.

During an unpaid FMLA leave of absence you must use any accrued PTO before to going into an unpaid status.

Top 5 Things You Need to Know

  • Notify your manager of your expected leave dates. Meet with your manager to discuss your upcoming leave of absence, including the expected dates you will be off from work. If your leave is not eligible for STD benefits, you will need to use your remaining accrued PTO during your leave.
  • Notify the Benefits Department about your leave. Submit a ticket through MyIT with your expected leave dates and PTO balance (if your leave will be unpaid).
  • Contact Liberty Mutual about your leave that is eligible for disability benefits or your FMLA-eligible leave. As soon as you know you'll be absent from work for more than five days, apply for your short-term disability benefits to avoid payment delays and/or your FMLA leave. Apply online at mylibertyconnection.com (Use company code: BMC2008) or call 1-888-408-7300. You can initiate your claim up to 30 days before your estimated leave date if you're scheduled for surgery or child birth.
  • Provide medical documentation. You and your doctor must submit supporting medical documentation to Liberty Mutual to determine if you qualify for disability benefits and if your medical condition qualifies. Follow up with your doctor to ensure the required medical documentation is sent to Liberty Mutual; failure to provide the requested information can delay your benefits.
  • Check if your state offers disability benefits. If you live in California, New York, New Jersey or Hawaii, you may be eligible for state disability benefits. If you are a California employee, initiate your state disability insurance (SDI) claim online through the State of California Employment Development Department (EDD) website or contact the EDD State Disability Insurance Department at 1-800-480-3287. All others must contact their local state disability insurance office to initiate a claim. Any state disability benefits you are eligible to receive are deducted from the benefits you receive from Liberty Mutual.
