Congratulations to Team Old School Rock and Roll, grand prize winners of the 8th Annual Step-IT-Up team Challenge in May. The seven-member team achieved the highest average step count, logging 3,466,297 steps during the month-long competition. Team members include Chris C., Gillian C., Chris H., Laura J., Bill M., Oto S., and John W. Each team member received a $250 reward and 500 bWell points.
The individual highest step count winner is Tiffiney M., who recorded 1,370,197 steps and earned a $250 reward. How did she do it? “I set my daily goal and designated times to walk, run and work out. I had reminders set 30 minutes before my workout session, counting down in 10-minute increments so I could wrap up what I was doing and be prepared to get my steps in,” Tiffiney says. Team Old School Rock and Roll shares the secrets behind their grand prize win.
“I would say my key to keeping up with running is having workout partners. It is easy to stop for a while or skip runs now and then if you are doing all of them solo. Having friends that run with you regularly helps motivate you and keep you accountable. There have been days where I didn’t feel like running, and a workout partner invited me on a run, so that got me out there. Registering for local 5k or 10k races also helps me stay motivated because I have a goal.” Chris C.
“This is a picture of me on one of many hikes I went on during the Challenge. I was super lucky to join a random team on my second day at BMC, which ended up being so great! Finding a group or friend to work out with really helps. This team is keeping my exercise regimen in check during the pandemic! Gillian C.
“During May, I ran 138 Miles, I cycled 427 miles, and I swam almost 40,000 meters (25 miles). I also walked the dogs 2 miles every day and dug several drainage ditches around my house. I would not encourage this approach as a best practice, but it worked for me. This photo is from The Fort Worth Triathlon where I participated in the Olympic Distance (1500M Swim, 25-mile bike, 10K Run) on May 23rd.” Chris H.
“Similar but very different than Chris, I was also utilizing multiple ways to accumulate steps (cycling, walking, working in the yard, shopping with my wife, etc.) since I had a couple minor injuries over the past few months. The best practice for me is to start early. I try to get out the door on my bike by 6.a.m. Thankfully I have a few guys in the neighborhood who also cycle, and we keep each other accountable. Bill M.
“Love riding/racing bikes, averaging about 150 miles a week. Placed 4th in the Zwift Racing League last month with my local Alto Velo Racing Team. My only tip would be to join a team that cares, pushes, and motivates you.” Oto S.
“The REAL secret is to find a team of crazy people like this and sign up with them. Not only do they log insane amounts of steps, but they also motivate you to do more, more, MORE! I’m not a runner or a cyclist but do love the outdoors, and thus my favorite way to get steps is from hiking. Unfortunately, weather and circumstance greatly affected my ability to get my hikes in this time around, so the credit for this win goes to all the crazy people! John W.
