If You Leave BMC

Understand what happens to your health coverage, retirement savings, life insurance, and other benefits when your employment with BMC ends.

When do MyBenefits End?

If your employment with BMC ends, the date your benefits may end depends on the type of benefit and your termination date. Some benefits end immediately, while others may continue for a period of time or allow you to convert or continue coverage.

For complete information about the offboarding process—including final pay, company property, system access, and employment policies—review the US Termination Guidelines.

Health Benefits

If your employment with BMC ends, your medical, dental, and vision coverage will generally end according to the terms of the plan.

If you and your covered dependents lose health care coverage, you may be eligible to continue coverage through COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act). COBRA is a federal law that allows eligible employees and qualified beneficiaries to temporarily continue group health coverage after certain qualifying events.

COBRA continuation coverage is available for:

  • Medical
  • Dental
  • Vision
  • Health Care Flexible Spending Account (when applicable)
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

If you're eligible, you'll receive a COBRA election notice explaining your continuation options, premiums, and enrollment deadlines. BMC does not contribute toward COBRA premiums, so you'll pay the full cost of coverage, plus any applicable administrative fee.

Depending on your qualifying event, COBRA coverage may continue for 18, 29, or 36 months. Your COBRA election notice will include the continuation period that applies to you.

Questions about COBRA? Contact Your Benefits Resources.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

Health Care and Dependent Care FSAs are subject to IRS rules when employment ends.

Depending on your account type and circumstances:

  • You may be able to submit claims for eligible expenses incurred before your coverage ends.
  • You may have additional rights if you elect COBRA for a Health Care FSA.

Refer to your plan documents or contact Your Benefits Resources for details.

Health Savings Account (HSA)

Your HSA is yours to keep.

Even after leaving BMC:

  • The money in your account remains yours.
  • You can continue to use your balance for qualified medical expenses.
  • If you're enrolled in another qualified High-Deductible Health Plan, you may continue making contributions.

Retirement Savings

Your 401(k) account remains yours after you leave BMC.

Depending on your balance and personal circumstances, you may be able to:

  • Leave your money in the plan
  • Roll it over to another qualified retirement account
  • Roll it into a new employer's retirement plan
  • Take a distribution (taxes and penalties may apply)

Contact Fidelity for your available options.

Life Insurance

Group life insurance generally ends when your employment ends.

Depending on the plan provisions, you may have the option to:

  • Convert your group coverage to an individual policy, or
  • Port eligible coverage.

Conversion and portability deadlines are time-sensitive, so review your options promptly after receiving your termination materials.

Disability Coverage

Short- and long-term disability coverage generally ends when your employment ends. Benefits already in progress are administered according to the terms of the applicable plan.

Other Benefits

Eligibility for programs such as the Employee Assistance Program, voluntary benefits, and other company-sponsored programs may end when your employment ends. Refer to your termination materials or contact Your Benefits Resources for details.
